NATUROPATHY

What is Naturopathy?

Naturopathy provides a holistic approach to health, taking into consideration the body, mind and emotions and how these elements interact with each other to affect bodily function.

Modern Naturopathy is an integrative approach to health care, combining scientific understanding of diagnosis, disease processes, testing and bodily function with the belief that the body has an innate intelligence to maintain wellness, if given the right circumstance and conditions.

The cause of mind, body and emotional imbalance can vary from person to person, therefore Naturopaths emphasise the importance of developing and implementing individually tailored health plans to treat the person and not the disease.

Naturopathy employs evidenced based nutritional and herbal supplementation and dietary and lifestyle advice to address the underlying cause of imbalance and support the body in its ability to restore wellness.

Who can benefit from Naturopathy?

Naturopathy can assist people of all ages in overcoming various health concerns.

Orthodox or biomedicine is undeniably the first line of treatment in cases of acute and emergency medical situations.  However, these cases are only a small percentage of medical issues.  Often medical cases are complex, chronic and require ongoing management in both treatment and prevention.

Naturopathy has a strong emphasis on prevention and is particularly effective in the treatment of chronic health conditions.  Naturopathic practitioners are often referred to where a detailed case history and dietary review is needed and specific dietary, lifestyle and supplementation advice is required, for example, in conditions such as:

  • Suspected food sensitivities and intolerances

  • Chronic skin conditions

  • Digestive health issues

  • Obesity and metabolic syndrome

  • Weight loss

  • Anxiety and low mood

  • Menopause

  • Gynecological disorders such as PCOS and endometriosis

  • Chronic fatigue

  • Immune and autoimmune conditions

Functional disorders are another common reason why people see Naturopaths.  A functional disorder is a disorder that exists despite no diagnosable pathology, such as in the case of:

  • Infertility

  • Premenstrual tension

  • Symptoms of the menopause

  • Hormonal imbalances

  • Adrenal fatigue

  • Irritable bowel syndrome

Preventative medicine is another common reason why people see Naturopathic practitioners.  Preventative medicine offers patients the opportunity to be proactive in their own healthcare and participate in preventative health strategies, such as in the case of:

  • Overweight/obesity

  • Metabolic syndrome

  • Healthy ageing

  • Wellness checks

These conditions are all examples of where there may be a number of underlying causes and a holistic approach is effective in restoring health and wellbeing.
